Methodology & Reference
Every term and dashboard measure in one place — what it means, how it is calculated, and why it matters.
Use the search box for a term, an abbreviation (LH+F/LM, DH, OO), or a phrase from a definition. Filter by category or tag, expand any entry for the calculation and the analytical note, and copy a link to share a single term with a colleague.
Dashboard measure names use these shorthands. Each is also searchable above.
| Abbreviation | Means | Notes |
|---|---|---|
OR | Operating Ratio | Cost ÷ revenue × 100. Lower is better; 100 is break-even. |
FM OR / IB OR / OB OR / Core OR | FreightMath, Inbound, Outbound, Core Operating Ratio | The four OR dimensions. FM OR composites the other three. |
LH | Linehaul | The base hauling rate, before fuel surcharge and accessorials. |
F / FSC | Fuel surcharge | Fuel cost passed through to the customer. |
Acc'l | Accessorial | Charges beyond linehaul and fuel — detention, layover, TONU. |
LM | Loaded miles | FreightMath practical (standardized) loaded miles. |
BM | Billable miles | Miles the TMS actually billed. |
TM | Total miles | Loaded plus empty miles. |
LPM / TPM | Loaded / total practical (costing) miles | The mileage standard used inside the cost-allocation engine. |
DH | Deadhead | Empty miles or hours. |
PrePu / PstDel | Pre-pickup / post-delivery | Which side of the load the deadhead falls on. |
CO / LP / OO | Company / lease-purchase / owner-operator | Driver types; costs are allocated separately for each. |
Sett | Settlement basis | Driver pay measured from actual settlements rather than the standard mileage allocation. |
Perc | Percent | e.g. Empty Perc, Delay Perc. |
Orig / Dest | Origin / destination | Pickup / delivery location. |
/Ld, /Load | Per load | The measure divided by the load count. |
CF | Comparable fleet | Peer-carrier benchmark data, not the client’s own. |
DAT | DAT iQ | Third-party freight-rate index used as an external benchmark. |
Three rules apply to every measure in the catalog:
Every ratio — the OR variants and all the per-mile rates — adds up its dollar and mile components across the current selection first, then divides once. None of them average a pre-computed ratio, so they stay accurate however the data is sliced.
Each measure is evaluated over the loads that survive the active slicers and filters. Change the period, Bill-To, or area and every number recalculates from segment-level cost.
Empty miles and hours depend on the Deadhead Model slicer (PRE, POST, SPLIT), which controls how empty segments are attributed between the load before a gap and the load after it. Total network cost never changes; the assignment does.
